REDUCING MALNUTRITION AROUND THE WORLD

REDUCING MALNUTRITION
AROUND THE WORLD

We've launched the Abbott Center for Malnutrition Solutions to creatively tackle malnutrition globally.

MALNUTRITION AFFECTS ONE IN THREE PEOPLE GLOBALLY

MALNUTRITION AFFECTS ONE IN THREE PEOPLE GLOBALLY

Vulnerable groups continue to be disproportionately impacted by a lack of access to good nutrition.

A PROBLEM THAT'S SLOW TO IMPROVE

Malnutrition affects 1 in 3 people around the world—all ages, all geographies and all socioeconomic classes. Progress to address malnutrition has been slow and has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Malnutrition takes many forms:

  • Stunting: 149 million kids fall below a healthy height for their age
  • Underweight: 462 million adults are below a healthy body mass index (BMI)
  • Wasting: 45 million kids under 5 are below a healthy weight for their height
  • Overweight or obese: 1.9 billion adults are overweight or obese and 39 million children under 5 are overweight

The problem is extremely complex. Conflict, environmental crises and economic instability play a role. Vulnerable groups continue to be disproportionately impacted by these disruptions and lack of resources, impacting access to good nutrition and ultimately improved outcomes.

TAKING A DIFFERENT APPROACH

Tackling malnutrition is no small task. By listening to what's needed at the local levels, bringing forward innovative ideas and working with partners, we can make a meaningful impact on malnutrition.

That's why we've created the Abbott Center for Malnutrition Solutions—a collaboration between Abbott and external nutrition experts and partners—to identify, treat and prevent malnutrition.
